"I AM THE KNITTER, YOU ARE THE YARN" (Loosely paraphrased)
Romans 9:21 says, "Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for noble purposes and some for common use?" (New International Version)
As a knitter, I understand this concept. I buy worsted weight cotton yarn by the pound. It's a wonderful yarn that I like very much oft, colorful, easy to work with, durable, washable, bleachable. I use it for all sorts of knitted things: bath mats and wash mitts, doilies and placemats, kitchen dishrags and hot pads, Christmas tree skirts, casual curtains, summer tee shirts, heirloom quality afghans. I don't value the yarn any less when I use it for a dishrag instead of a wedding afghan. Rather, it has to do with what I need at that particular moment. In fact, if this yarn didn't perform well as a dishrag, I might question whether it was fit for an afghan either. The dishrag may wear out sooner because of hard use, but that's exactly what it was meant to do.
So it is with us. God chooses to use us for the purpose he needs at the moment. It isn't up to us to choose how we're used; the only choice we're given is how well we accept his sovereignty and whether or not we do our job to the best of our ability.
